On October 4th, I presented my study titled "Employer's Supervision of Social Media Activities of Workers and Its Effect on Labour Relation", derived from my master's thesis, at the 19th National Congress of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations held in Zonguldak between October 4-6, 2018.
In my master's thesis, the historical development of the concept of surveillance and the supervision of workers' social media use were examined in detail within the context of freedom of expression, the right to private life, and the privacy of personal data. In the conference paper, which serves as a summary of this comprehensive study, the boundaries of social media surveillance by the employer and the relationship between this supervision and the duty of loyalty, which constitute the main discussion axis of the thesis, were discussed. Focusing particularly on the third chapter of the thesis, practical legal evaluations were shared with the participants, such as how to establish a balance between the employer's management rights and the worker's public freedoms, the reasons for compliance with the law regarding surveillance, and the potential outcomes of illegal supervision.
