The master's thesis, which we conducted under the supervision of my esteemed advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gaye Burcu YILDIZ within the Department of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations at the Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences, is now available at the CoHE Thesis Center.
In this study titled "Employer's Supervision of Social Media Activities of Workers and Its Effect on Labour Relation" the reflections of the concept of surveillance, which has evolved throughout the historical process, on contemporary working life are examined. The behavior of monitoring the environment, which is a tool for survival for living creatures, has transformed into a more complex surveillance mechanism with the increase in cognitive levels; this mechanism, used by people in power to sustain their power, has placed the worker at its focus with the emergence of paid labour. Within the scope of this study, the supervision of workers' social media usage by the employer is addressed under three main pillars: freedom of expression, the right to private life, and the right to privacy of personal data. Furthermore, the said supervision is evaluated in terms of the rights and obligations arising from labour relations, and the reasons for compliance with the law as well as the possible outcomes of illegal surveillance are discussed.
A paper derived from this thesis was presented as an abstract at the 19th Congress of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations.
