The Symposium on the Modernization Process of Turkey and Mekteb-i Mülkiye was held on 19-20 November 2019, as part of the events marking the 160th anniversary of the founding of Mekteb-i Mülkiye. I contributed to the organisation and execution of this event.
The symposium was convened to examine the historical role and impact of Mülkiye, a pivotal educational institution, within the modernisation initiatives spanning from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. The event addressed not only administrative and political history but also the institution’s contributions to diverse fields, including the development of social sciences, urban studies, environmental science, culture, arts, and sports. Nearly 80 academicians and experts from 24 universities and various institutions discussed this legacy through their presented papers.
The works presented at the symposium were compiled and published as a book in 2021. Edited by Prof. Dr. Orhan Çelik, Prof. Dr. Can Umut Çiner, and Res. Asst. Abdullah Pekel, the volume was released by Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences Publications under the title The Modernization Process of Turkey and Mekteb-i Mülkiye.
