Biting the Hand That Feeds: The Potential Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Artistic Labour

A review article presenting the core arguments of the study titled “The Potential Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Artistic Labour”, originally published in the Special Issue on Culture of Mülkiye Dergisi, has appeared in the 10th issue of the Tablet bulletin dated October 2024 under the title “Biting the Hand That Feeds: The Potential Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Artistic Labour”. Tablet serves as the monthly online publication of the Technology and Public Administration Group, which was established on LinkedIn following the 1st Public Administration Congress organised by the Public Administration Association in 2023. This bulletin connects stakeholders with recent developments, scholarly research, and contemporary debates at the intersection of public administration and technology.

The featured article explores the relationship between the cumulative evolution of technology and the distinctive nature of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), specifically its capacity to internalise human fallibility. Drawing on recent strikes and legal proceedings in the United States, the piece illustrates how GenAI threatens artistic labour through the unauthorised appropriation of artists’ works, voices, and likenesses. The text further highlights the comparative disadvantages faced by artists in Türkiye regarding legal protections and organised labour relative to their counterparts in the USA, and it emphasises the urgent need for public planning and policy development to mitigate the adverse effects of AI on the artistic workforce.
