Test Answer Area Generator/Reader

Prepares answer areas for multiple-choice exams, and reads and scores completed sheets with a camera or from uploaded photos.

Test Answer Area Generator

The answer area appears in the preview as you choose the number of digits in the student number, the number of questions, options and groups, the points for each question and whether wrong answers cancel correct ones. You can choose up to 100 questions, 5 options, 4 groups and a 12-digit number. If the questions carry different points and their order differs between groups, the points of each group can be typed separately. If wrong answers should cancel correct ones, one less than the number of options is usually chosen (4 for 5 options, 3 for 4 options, 1 for true-false questions). Groups are not written on the sheet. They are told apart only by the QR code on the left of the area. The QR code on the right carries the settings of the exam. The answer key is never written into any QR code. The area is read with the Test Answer Area Reader.

A separate file is downloaded for each group. The PDF file is an answer sheet that can be printed on its own. The area in the Word file is prepared for you to paste into your own exam paper. In an exam with groups, “Download All” gives the files of all groups in a single ZIP file. You can enlarge or reduce the area, but its proportions must be kept, it must not be cropped, and the four corner squares and the QR codes must remain visible.

Students should fill in the box they choose completely. If more than one box is filled in for a question, that question is counted as wrong.

Test Answer Area Reader

The Test Answer Area Reader reads only answer areas prepared with the Test Answer Area Generator, so the two tools are used together. First scan a sheet of the exam with “Open Camera” or “Upload Photo”. It may be blank or filled in with the correct answers. The tool learns the settings of the exam from the QR code on the sheet and shows them to you. Then type the answer key of each group, or scan a sheet of that group filled in with the correct answers (answer key) with the same buttons. The tool recognises which group the sheet belongs to and fills in that group’s answer key. You can also upload the key sheets of several groups together.

When the answer keys are ready, move on to the sheets with “Start Reading”. Sheets are read as follows, depending on your device:

  • On portable devices (mobile phone, tablet, etc.): Tap “Open Camera” and hold the camera over the answer area. If the browser asks for camera access, allow it. Once the reading is stable, the result appears and you continue with “Next Sheet”. If you prefer, you can take a photo of the sheet or choose one from the gallery with “Upload Photo”. If you choose several photos from the gallery together, they are read one after another. If you switch to another app, the camera closes by itself. When you come back, you can open it again with “Open Camera”.
  • On a computer: Upload photos or scanned images of the sheets with “Upload Photo”. If you choose several files together, they are read one after another. The computer’s camera can also be used with “Open Camera”, but holding a sheet up to it is awkward.

JPG, PNG and WebP files open in every browser, and iPhone HEIC photos open in Safari. Marks that cannot be read with certainty are shown to you with their photo. Questions with more than one mark are counted as wrong. A sheet from another exam, or a sheet whose QR code has been changed, is not scored. If the same student’s sheet is scanned again, the tool warns you. If the two readings differ, the differing questions are shown from both photos and you choose which reading to use. When several photos are read together, the queue waits wherever you need to decide (an uncertain mark, an unreadable number, a different second reading of the same student) and continues once you choose. Photos that could not be read are listed at the end with their names and reasons.

When reading is finished, press “Download”. A ZIP file called “Exam Reading (date and time)” is downloaded. Opening it gives a folder with the same name. The folder contains an Excel file with columns for student number, group, wrong, blank, correct and points, sorted by student number in ascending order, and photos of the sheets named by student number. The marks that were read are drawn on the photos as on the screen. Correct answers are in black, wrong marks are framed in red, and the correct answer of a wrong or blank question is in dashed blue. The group name is written over the group QR code, and the numbers of correct, wrong and blank answers with the points below the answer grid. On a computer, double-click the ZIP file to open it as a folder. On portable devices, the ZIP file is saved to the Files app and opens when you tap it. The reading is deleted when the page is closed, so download it before closing the page. If you try to close or reload the page without downloading, the browser warns you. Each download creates a new file with the date and time of that moment and does not overwrite the previous one.

Together with the Test Question Area Generator

This tool prepares only the answer area. If you write the questions on your own exam paper, you only need to paste the area in the Word file downloaded here into your paper. If you would also like to prepare the questions, you can use the Test Question Area Generator. There the questions are typed or pasted and shuffled for each group, and the question booklet and the answer key of each group are downloaded as PDF or Word. The same answer area as in this tool is added to the booklet. If the questions carry different points in each group, the order of each group’s points is also written into the answer area automatically.

So there are two ways. If your exam paper is ready, you create only the answer area with this tool. If you would also like to prepare the questions with a tool, the Test Question Area Generator gives you the booklet together with the answer area. In both cases the sheets are read with the Test Answer Area Reader. The answer key of the Test Question Area Generator also contains an answer area filled in with the correct answers, which you can scan in the answer key step of the reader.
