Test Question Area Generator

Prepares the questions of multiple-choice exams, shuffles them for each group, and produces the question booklet and the answer key as PDF or Word.

How to Use

First choose the details and settings of the exam. The institution, course, name of the exam, date and duration are optional, and whatever you fill in is printed at the top of the booklet. The settings are the same as in the Test Answer Area Generator. You choose the number of digits in the student number, the number of options and groups, the points and whether wrong answers cancel correct ones. The points can be the same for all questions or typed separately for each question. You can choose up to 100 questions, 5 options and 4 groups. The instructions of the exam are written automatically from the settings, and you can change them if you wish.

Then type the questions. For each question you type the question and its options, and tap the letter of the correct option. You can make text bold, italic or underlined, and use superscript and subscript. Images can be added to questions, reading texts and options. Images are saved again when they are added, so hidden information such as the location of a photo does not pass into the files. Use “Add Text” for questions based on a reading text. The text and its questions move together when shuffling. If your questions are already written, you can paste them from Word or anywhere else with “Add in Bulk”. The tool separates the questions, options and correct answers by itself, and you only need to check them.

The tool checks what you type all the time. An empty option, a missing correct answer or invalid points are listed in the Check section, and the files cannot be downloaded until they are fixed. In the Preview section, the pages of the booklet and the answer key appear as they will be printed.

Shuffling

The order of the questions and the order of the options can be shuffled separately. When the options are shuffled, the correct answers in each group are spread evenly across the letters. For example, in a 20-question exam with 5 options, each letter is the correct answer 4 times and the same letter never comes three times in a row. A question that must not move is marked “Fixed position” and keeps the same number in every group. For last options such as “All of the above” or “None of the above”, choose “Last option stays in place”, and for ordered options such as “I only” or “I and II”, choose “Not shuffled”. The questions of a text can be shuffled among themselves or kept in order. If you wish, Group A keeps the order you typed while the other groups are shuffled.

Shuffling is done once and shown group by group in the tool. The booklet and the answer key are produced from the same arrangement, so they match even if you download them separately. For a different arrangement, use “Shuffle Again”. A four-character matching code is printed at the bottom of the booklets and the answer keys. A booklet and an answer key with the same code match.

Files

The question booklet and the answer key of each group are downloaded separately as PDF or Word. “Download All” gives all the files in a single ZIP file. The booklet is A4. Short options are placed side by side, medium-length options two by two, and long options one under another. A question is never split across two pages. If the questions carry different points, the points of each question are printed at its end. The group is not printed on the sheet, only in the file name. If you wish, it can also be printed at the top of the page.

The PDF is ready to print. You can edit the questions in the Word file, but if you change a question in Word, you should correct the answer key yourself as well. The answer key shows the correct answer and points of each question and its number in the order it was typed into the tool. This number can be used to find the same question in other groups.

What you type is deleted when the page is closed. To keep your work, download the draft to your device with “Save Draft”, and later continue where you left off with “Open Draft”. The draft file contains the questions and answers, so it should not be shared with students. If you try to close or reload the page without saving the draft, the browser warns you.

Together with the Test Answer Area Generator/Reader

The same answer area as in the Test Answer Area Generator/Reader can be added to the last or first page of the booklet. Students mark their answers in this area, and the sheets are read and scored with the Test Answer Area Reader. If the questions carry different points in each group, the order of each group’s points is written into the answer area automatically. The answer key also contains an answer area filled in with the correct answers. In the answer key step of the reader, you can simply scan this area or type the letters in the key.
